Campfire along the Missouri River - Volunteers reenact a typical campfire scene at the end of a long and tiring day for the keelboat crew. Certain men were detailed to prepare the evening meal. Leftovers would be kept for their breakfast and lunch the next day. Meat -- elk, bison and deer -- was their main diet. They consumed 7-10 pounds per man, each day. Photo: ©Charley Van Pelt
